Asbury introduces ultimate frisbee to club sports selection

WILMORE, Ky. — Asbury University Athletics announced ultimate frisbee as the newest addition to its vibrant Club Sports lineup. It will begin official competition in the fall of 2023, adding to roundnet, pickleball and disc golf.

“An ultimate frisbee program has been a part of the conversation since the beginning of club sports at AU, and we’re extremely excited to be rolling it out this fall,” said Club Sports Director Zeke Friedeman ’18. “Not only is it a great sport, but it also has a strong local presence in central Kentucky. Just like our other club sports, Asbury Ultimate will be able to jump right into the collegiate scene and compete against some of the best Division I schools in the nation, like University of Kentucky, the Ohio State University, and University of Cincinnati.”

A hybrid of many traditional sports, this exciting game fosters an action-packed race for each team to score in its end zone. The non-contact game is self-officiated, in which players distinguish fouls, calls, and points. Asbury’s Club Sports program is the game of choice for more than 50 student-athletes, with projections to grow after Asbury Ultimate’s introduction. Many schools nationwide have adopted club sports as student-run campus clubs that function as a casual, ‘come and go’ activity. In contrast, at Asbury, the Club Sport teams stand out as official, funded, well-coached programs that give students a true athletic experience that would be similar to any other sport.

“Club Sports are a great point of connection and belonging at Asbury University, giving students a chance to compete athletically at a higher level without committing to the demands of an intercollegiate sport,” said Vice President of Athletics Mark Whitworth. “Coach Friedeman has taken this program to new heights, and I am excited about the expanded competitive opportunities that Club Sports provide for our student body.”

Asbury’s ultimate frisbee club sport will begin team building and competing this coming fall semester. For more information, visit asbury.edu/clubsports.
