RICHMOND, Ky. — Kent Kessler, MD, of Baptist Health Medical Group General Surgery in Richmond, celebrated a professional milestone for performing 150 robotic-assisted surgeries at Baptist Health Richmond using the da Vinci Xi Robot from Intuitive.

“At Baptist Health Richmond, we love that our patients get the opportunity to have minimally invasive robotic surgery close to home,” said Erica Gregonis, MD, vice president and chief medical officer at Baptist Health Richmond. “Dr. Kessler has embraced this new technology and understands the benefits for his patients with quicker recovery times including shorter hospital stays and smaller incisions.”

Physicians started using the da Vinci Xi Robot, the most advanced robotic technology, last fall when the hospital purchased the equipment to support patient outcomes and the well-being of physicians.

“From a surgeon’s perspective, it gives them enhanced precision, control, and visibility during the procedure with less physical stress on their bodies while operating.  It is a win-win for both patient and surgeon,” Gregonis said.

The da Vinci Xi Surgical System allows physicians to operate robotically for a number of complex surgeries including bariatric, gynecology and obstetrics, urology and general surgeries. Advantages of the robot include smaller incisions, less blood loss during surgery, fewer complications, and shorter recovery periods.

“The da Vinci Xi is the gold standard for minimally invasive surgery, and we could not be prouder that we have this technology at Baptist Health Richmond,” said Greg D. Gerard, president at Baptist Health Richmond. “Dr. Kessler embraced this incredible technology quickly, realizing the benefits to both his patients and him.  Whenever I see Dr. Kessler, he is always sharing the vast benefits he is realizing from using this technology. From better visualization to smaller incisions, to less complications and to faster recoveries, Dr. Kessler is seeing the positive outcomes in his patients. This technology truly improves the patient experience, and I am so grateful that we are able to offer this service locally.”

Physicians use the high-tech da Vinci robot to help perform minimally invasive procedures. The robot seamlessly translates the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient in an area smaller than would be required for the surgeon’s hands.

The robot’s design, which integrates the operating table with the robotic technology, is more efficient and practical, which aids the surgeon and can shorten surgery time for patients.
